Matthew Ellis, recent graduate of Bethel University, has been named No. 5 in the nation from the National Collegiate Sports Sales Championship Ticket Sales Power Rankings.

The NCSSC, held annually, allows students studying sports management to compete against peers and network with professionals. Ellis, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Sports Management degree on December 10, was the highest ranked participant out of the other Tennessee higher education institutions participating with a score of 84.2 out of 100 and just shy of three points from the top score. He will be representing Bethel at the in-person portion of the competition, held in Atlanta on Feb. 27-28.

Dr. Joshua Greer, associate professor of sports management, discussed the impact that this ranking has on the sports management program. “This is a big deal for the [sports management] program since we are only in year three. To have someone rank nationally highlights our students and the time and effort put into the program,” said Greer. Out of 250 higher education institutions that participated in the competition, Greer stated that Bethel was considered one of the smallest schools represented.

Ellis reported that largely due to this national ranking, he has already received two job opportunities in the sports management industry. “From my first day in the program, I was able to participate in so many different events and opportunities that allowed me to break out of my shell and make important connections,” he said. During his three-and-a-half years at Bethel, Ellis participated in two Superbowls, two NFL drafts, an NBA All-Star Weekend, and much more.

Bethel University’s sports management program continues to grow and find exciting, real-world learning opportunities for its students. “Without the support and encouragement of Dr. Greer and Dr. Wilson, I wouldn’t be here today,” said Ellis.
